Specifically, Premium users now get uploading support for Power BI Desktop (.PBIX) files that are up to 10 GB in size. This is a 10x increase compared to what was previously available. It is common for Power BI datasets to be highly compressed, holding data volumes multiple times their size. The new increased file size support means Power BI Premium supports larger datasets more easily. Users will not have to change the process for managing files. This means they will create a report, publish it to a workspace. Once this is done, Premium’s new capacity support can take care of the data. Now users can distribute reports and dashboards without needing per-using licensing. Natural language support for data questioning is also available, and refreshes can be scheduled to stay up to date.
To start using Power BI Premium with large datasets, download the latest version of Power BI Desktop.
Power BI Premium
The premiums version of Power BI took some features and hid them behind a paywall. For example, users can no longer share private dashboard in the free powerbi.com version. Instead, they need the premium version to share in such a way: “Power BI Premium enables the same number of virtual cores an organization provisions in the cloud to also be deployed on-premises without the need to split the capacity. Choose Power BI in the cloud, or maintain reports on-premises with Power BI Report Server and move to the cloud at your pace.” All shared content for private users is now only available to paying customers. Microsoft explained why when launching the service: “Consumers of content shared with them have the flexibility to be licensed individually with Power BI Pro, or with capacity in Power BI Premium when it becomes generally available late this quarter.”
