Users of the Sophos antivirus software reported their machines would not boot after the updates were installed. Microsoft blocked the update for users without it. Those who had already updated were told to enter in Safe Mode and remove the patch. The latest problem suggests the problem has migrated to Windows 10, albeit with seemingly less impact. Sophos and Avast are not affected on Windows 10, but users of ArcaBit are reporting their devices won’t boost following Patch Tuesday. Luckily, ArcaBit is a relatively unknown and small Polish anti-virus developer, so the problem experienced on Windows 10 version 1809 is not widespread. “Microsoft and ArcaBit have identified an issue on devices with ArcaBit antivirus software installed that may cause the system to become unresponsive upon restart after installing this update,” Microsoft said in update on Saturday to known issues affecting Windows 10 1809. “Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, ‘STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)’. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege.”

Windows 7/8.1 Issues Expand

While ArcaBit is only affected so far, we won’t be surprised to see more Windows 10 anti-virus tools find issues. That’s because the problem on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 has now expanded to the Avira software. Microsoft blocked the update for Avira anti-virus users over the weekend. “Microsoft has temporarily blocked devices from receiving this update if Avira antivirus software is installed. We are presently investigating this issue with Avira and will provide an update when available,” Microsoft notes.
