As you’d expect, the major announcement is that FSLogix container technology is available at no extra cost to Microsoft 365 business customers. This should significantly improve the performance of ProPlus in virtual environments, including Windows Virtual Desktop on its release later this year. The improvement is available to those on the following plans:

Microsoft 365 E3/E5/A3/A5/Student Use Benefits/F1/Business Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5 Windows 10 Education A3/A5 Windows 10 VDA per user Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Client Access License (CAL) and Subscriber Access License (SAL)

Windows Server 2019 Features

Alongside this, the tech giant has announced that OneDrive Files-On-Demand is coming to Windows Server 2019 “in the coming months”. Office 365 ProPlus will also be coming to Server in the future. As well as the FXLogix containers, Microsoft has made several improvements to the apps themselves to aid the virtualization experience. OneDrive and Teams now feature a per-machine installation option, which lets users share a single install while keeping their own folders and files. Microsoft is also introducing Windows Search per-user index, which will let each user profile keep its own personalized results. On top of this, Microsoft is planning to support Windows Virtual Desktop with Teams, improve app deployment, enhance performance, and optimize caching for non-persistent setups. Speaking of caching, improvements in that regard are also coming to OneDrive. A new cached mode will sync Inbox before Calendar while reducing the number of folders that are synced by default. The idea here is to make it faster for employees to get to a point where they can start work. Together, these additions should lead to a marked improvement when using Office 365 in virtual environments. You can find more information about the additions on the Microsoft 365 blog.
