You may remember Project Neon’s first origins were in several Microsoft apps for PC. Namely, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Contacts, and Calculator all received early elements of Fluent Design. However, these elements were limited to PC. Luckily, through the same apps, we can now see that Fluent Design will indeed be coming to Windows 10 Mobile too. Members of the Windows Insider Program on the Fast Ring are seeing latest updates for Groove and Movies & TV for mobile. Both these native apps are now carrying cool blurring and transparency effects through versions 10.17042.12812.0 of the apps. Like we seen on PC, the traces of Fluent Design are few and only visible in some parts of the UI. Of course, when the design language launches fully, expect to see a more drastic change to the general look and feel of Windows 10 and native apps. Although, Microsoft says the version of Fluent Design for the Fall Creators Update will not be complete. While Microsoft Fluent Design System will start life with the Fall Creators Update, it is more expansive. Indeed, only the first seeds of the UI will be planted in the upcoming feature upgrade. However, it will be developers and evolved over the coming years.
Expanded Details
After Build 2017, Microsoft expanded on exactly what Fluent Design is and what it hopes to achieve. The UI will be closely linked to virtual and augmented reality as Windows 10 transitions from 2D to 3D. Scaling across all types of devices and screens is an important part of Project Neon. Again, this is a process that will take years to fully implement. Indeed, Microsoft says the Fall Creators Update will only be “wave 1” of Fluent Design System.
