The Windows 10 October 2018 Update has been plagued by problems, including Task Manager issues and deleting personal files through manual updates. Microsoft was forced to pull the update from release. It is recovering now through the Insider program in preview form, which is where the ZIP fix was issued. We reported last week Windows 10 October 2018 Update users complained of issues when extracting files from a ZIP archive. These early adopters of version 1809 said Windows was not informing them when an example of a file already exists on the system. Normally the platform would tell the user what they want to do with the existing file, delete it or keep it and rename the new extraction. In the October 2018 Update, the file extraction simply fails, and Windows 10 is not informing users it has failed. Users are left believing they have overwritten an existing file when they have not. It is worth noting this issue seems to only occur in the native zip function on the platform and I have been unable to reproduce it.
Launching Today?
With the release of cumulative update KB4464455, Microsoft solved the problem. The release also comes with the fixes for the Task Manager and manual update problems. KB4464455 is available now as Windows 10 1809 build 17763.107 on the Slow and Release Preview rings on the Inside. “We fixed the issue where dragging (extracting) files from a .zip file in File Explorer to a write-protected location you don’t get a “Do you want to replace these files” prompt and the copy action fails silently,” explained Microsoft. With the ZIP problem solved, the October 2018 Update is likely ready to be rolled out again. This could happen today if Microsoft wants to keep to the October launch schedule. Still, perhaps the company will want to test this fix on the Inside for a few days.
