Discovered by Microsoft watcher WalkingCat on Twitter, the documentation suggests the company is preparing a preview release. The documentation details two release channels for Microsoft Edge on Chromium. One is Microsoft Edge Canary, with Canary referencing Google’s preview version of Chrome. The other branch is Microsoft Edge Dev. Looking at the details, it looks as though Microsoft will limit Edge Insider Preview to Windows 10 64-bit. When available, the browser is expected to run on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 32-bit and 64-bit. “Microsoft Edge Insider builds are currently only available on Windows 10 (64-bit),” the documentation explains. “Other versions of Windows are not supported at this time.” https://twitter.com/h0x0d/status/1103500640695705600 Elsewhere, the documentation describes a frequently asked questions page, but it seems Microsoft has not published it yet.
Edge on Chromium
Back in December, Microsoft announced it will abandon its EdgeHTML web rendering technology and move its Edge browser to Google’s Chromium technology. The idea is to give Edge more access to apps through web apps to better compete with Chrome. “Today we’re announcing that we intend to adopt the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility for our customers and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers,” said Microsoft CVP Joe Belfiore said at the time. Since announcing it is embracing Chromium, Google and Microsoft has been working on integrating more Windows features into Chrome.
