That plan has now extended to older Windows 10 versions (via TechDows). Through the release of the KB4541301, KB4541302, KB4559309 updates, the new Microsoft Edge Chromium experience is available on Windows versions 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, and of course 2004. Users can download the browser via Windows Update. Microsoft’s original Edge browser was built on the company’s EdgeHTML rendering platform. In December 2018, Microsoft announced it would switch Edge to Google’s Chromium platform. Since then, Chromium Edge has moved through preview and became widely available in January this year. One of the benefits of Microsoft Edge on Chromium is Microsoft can reach feature parity with Google Chrome. Both Google and Microsoft now share features across the open source Chromium and work together on new tools.
Available Updates
Earlier this week, we reported on Microsoft actively advertising the new Edge experience to Windows users. While the legacy Edge app will remain a part of Windows 10, the company is no longer supporting it. If you’re on the newest or older Windows 10 builds, Windows Update now has the new Microsoft Edge browser:
KB4541301 (Edge Update for Windows 10 versions 1803 and 1809) KB4541302 (Edge Update for 1903 and 1909 versions)
Both the above updates work for the individual builds listed. However, Microsoft later rolled out KB4559309, which handles all versions of the platform.
